LearnPedia’s Approach to Structural Engineering Job Readiness in Australia
It was great to sit down with Michelle Ockers on Learning Uncut to talk about a challenge that has affected Moly and Alex as owners of a structural engineering company and is impacting our industry as a whole - how to close the skills gap in structural engineering.
At ANZ Engineers, we kept seeing the same problem. We’d hire engineers, invest months training them, and then they’d leave for a wide range of reasons. Meanwhile, so many migrant engineers and graduates were struggling to even get their foot in the door because they didn’t have local experience. The industry wasn’t connecting the dots.
That’s why we created LearnPedia - to give qualified engineers the knowledge of local construction materials and methods plus the practical project experience they need to hit the ground running. Our traineeship program doesn’t just teach technical skills; it prepares engineers to work with builders, architects, and surveyors, to understand real construction challenges, and to design solutions that actually work on-site.
In this conversation, we discussed:
- Why hands-on learning is so critical in engineering
- How we help engineers gain the experience they need to land jobs
- The importance of persistence and learning to advocate for yourself
If we want to solve the skills crisis, we need to rethink how we train and support engineers.
Thank you Michelle for the opportunity to share our insights, and we hope others find the episode helpful!
